Give us a brief overview of the path that led to your current role.

I went from the British Army to risk consulting, after being poached by one of my clients. I then moved from physical security to resilience to cyber security, where I am now.

What is one of your guiding leadership principles?

Servant Leadership

With disruption being a key theme of recent years, where do you see the CISO role going in the next 1-2 years?

I see it becoming more of a trusted partner and central to risk discussions.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out as a CISO?

Understand the business. You are first and foremost a business man/woman. Talk about risk and finding a pathway to “yes.”

Tell us three fun facts about yourself.

  1. I discovered a lost city in Bolivia.
  2. I had the US flag flown in my honour outside the Capitol in Washington, DC.
  3. I carried the Order of the Garter in front of Her Majesty the Queen Mother's coffin at her funeral.
