As the Chief Digital Officer at Sohar International, Sajeel BashiruddinI leads the strategic orchestration of a large-scale transformation initiative focusing on the future of banking, spearheading business expansion, pioneering digital strategies, and fostering organizational growth. He is responsible for the dynamic portfolio of critical functions, each pivotal to the strategic growth, which includes strategy execution (organic growth, mergers & acquisitions), enterprise PMO & IEO, group information technology, digital banking, digital payments, digital delivery, fintech and innovation.

When he is not working, Bashiruddin enjoys time with his family. He said, “I lead a binary life; it’s family or work!”

Give us a brief overview of the path that led to your current role.

My journey to becoming the Chief Digital Officer at Sohar International Bank has been marked by a dedication to strategic thinking, innovation and a passion for driving transformation in the banking sector.
 

What is one of your guiding leadership principles?

One of my guiding leadership principles is fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement. I believe that by encouraging creative thinking and embracing change, we can drive meaningful transformation and stay ahead in the ever-evolving landscape of the banking industry. This principle not only inspires my team to push the boundaries of what's possible but also ensures that we remain agile and responsive to new opportunities and challenges.
 

What is the greatest challenge technology leaders face today, and how are you addressing it?

One of the greatest challenges in my role as Chief Digital Officer at Sohar International Bank is navigating the rapid pace of technological change while ensuring that our digital transformation initiatives align with the evolving needs and expectations of our customers.

To address these challenges, I have implemented several strategic initiatives, including forging strategic partnerships and collaborations, adopting a customer-driven approach, embracing agile transformation, and focusing on talent development.
 

What is the key to success for someone just starting out as a CIO?

Success in a C-level role relies on developing a clear vision and strategy aligned with organizational goals, maintaining a customer-centric mindset, and embracing innovation.

Effective communication, agility, and strong leadership are crucial, as is the ability to adapt strategies to the constantly changing business landscape. Additionally, focusing on attracting, developing, and retaining top talent is absolutely critical.
 

How do you measure success as a leader?

As a leader, I measure success by the achievement of strategic objectives and the successful transformation of the organization aligned to its long-term vision, and this includes meeting financial goals. I also place a strong emphasis on the development of future leaders who will drive the continued progress of the organization.
