Governing Body Spotlight

Governing Body Member of the Toronto CISO Community

Bill Dunnion

CISO & VP Information Security

Mitel

Bill Dunnion is the CISO and Vice President, Information Security at Mitel. He is a father of four, almost an empty nester and still enthusiastic about working.

A fun fact: I still hold two high school track records, and the school is closing, so they'll never be beat.

Give us a brief overview of the path that led to your current role.

I started in Sales and Marketing in the telecommunications industry. I've made president's club and then got introduced to security products. I started to make the transition to operations and delivery on the back of a large managed authentication service for the federal government (10MM users).

I am now fortunate to be the CISO for Mitel, a billion-dollar, global telecommunications provider.

What is one of your guiding leadership principles?

Everybody's opinion matters.

What is the greatest challenge CISOs face today, and how are you addressing it?

My greatest challenge is the post-acquisition merging of two security programs, cultures and tech stacks. Addressing it one day at a time.

What is the key to success for someone just starting out as a CISO?

Zero Trust – in other words, "trust, but verify."

How do you measure success as a leader?

I measure success through participation and delivery dates.
