John McClure is the CISO & SVP, Enterprise Infrastructure & Cloud at Sinclair - a diversified media company and a leading provider of local news and sports. Prior to joining Sinclair, he served as the Global CISO for Laureate Education and spent over 20 years supporting the federal government and intelligence community. He enjoyed serving almost 8-years in Army Aviation both in the US and abroad. When he’s not out on the water, he enjoys leading and solving the most complex technical and business challenges for large enterprises.

Give us a brief overview of the path that led to your current role.
The path to my current role took many twists and turns over the years, but ultimately I wanted to be challenged and solve hard problems at scale. I have been very fortunate to have worked with many great mentors throughout my career who have helped guide me through my journey.
What is one of your guiding leadership principles?
There are so many guiding leadership principles that effective leaders must consider and embrace, but the one that I lean into the most frequently is to ensure that I am leading with integrity and empathy.
What is the greatest challenge CISOs face today, and how are you addressing it?
One of the greatest challenges for technology leaders is communicating all of the techno-babble into a business story that resonates with other business executives. I'm addressing it by ensuring my goals and mission remain closely aligned with business and that I learn more and more about the business of my organization.
What is the key to success for someone just starting out as a CISO?
Quickly find fantastic and supportive allies to work shoulder-to-shoulder with, and learn and align with the business vision and goals.
How do you measure success as a leader?
There are so many metrics, KPIs, OKRs, etc. that we all measure but at the end of the day, are you delivering maximum value to your organization? You'll deliver value in many ways, but the question remains the same!
